The split, with what is known and what is not
Israel becomes the genre's most internationally visible centre. Academic research links the scale of the Israeli scene to young people returning from the long trips that follow military service, and to the conditions that generation grows up in — not to a founding act or a date.[01]
Labels whose dates we can verify: Spiral Trax starts in Sweden in 1997, from Anders Enkvist; Peak Records, the first Swiss label in the genre, at the end of 2003, from Ajja, DJ Gaspard, Master Margherita and the visual artist Tanina Munchkina; Zenon Records in 2003 according to the label itself — Discogs credits brothers Tim and Matt Larner, the label credits Sensient, and we publish both.[02][03][04]
Iboga Records, central to progressive, publishes no founding year; its twentieth-anniversary interview in November 2016 puts the start around 1996–97, and that is how we cite it: as an interview, not as a record.[05]
What we do not know: we found no published source dating the origin of full-on, progressive or forest as named sounds. These are labels the scene adopts without a founding minute, and no research has dated them.[01]
