Micro-scenes become audible

Streaming, Bandcamp, social networks and digital production let small languages sustain international audiences without depending on one capital.

FOREST, HI-TECH, PSYBASS, NEO-GOA, PSYTECH1 NODES5 TECHNOLOGIESDOSSIER GLOBAL-07

Forest, hi-tech, psybass, neo-Goa, psytech

The stylistic tree stops being linear. Goa returns as neo-Goa; forest and hi-tech take speed and sound design in different directions; psybass and psytech cross stage boundaries.

Abundance solves access and creates another problem: context, authorship and chronology are buried in feeds. A catalogue needs to reconnect files with people, places and sources.

The labels of the micro-genres

Forest has labels with checkable dates. Insomnia Records says it was created in Moscow in 2001 — Discogs files 2002, and we flag the conflict. Forestdelic starts in Slovenia in early 2013, from Darko Toromanoski, with its first release that April.[01][02]

What we do not know, and it is a real gap: there is no published source, academic or press, dating the emergence of hi-tech or naming its first artists or labels. Everything we found is crowd-edited pages with no references. If you hold documentation, that is what this archive needs.[02]

A claim without a source does not stand on this page as fact. Where the evidence does not exist, we say so. If you find an error, write to us through the Contribute page — we fix it and log the correction with its date.
